Orlando Pirates are reading a contract extension for midfield anchor Makhehlene Makhaula.

MAKHAULA EARNS ORLANDO PIRATES EXTENSION

According to Soccer-Laduma, 34-year-old midfield general Makhehlene Makhaula will earn a new contract at the club. The former Free State Stars and AmaZulu man has become an integral part of the Pirates midfield since February. He’s even been preferred to Bafana Bafana schemer Thabang Monare in the engine room.

As for (Makhaula) is as good as done. Everything has gone very well with the talks and he has been given another year. I think they (Pirates) took into consideration his age as well. But the good thing is that he has also been doing good for himself after returning from injury. He is in the starting lineup for most of the games and the technical team believes in him. So, for now, it’s a one-year extension for Makhaula,” said the source.

Makhaula will keep his place for the Richards Bay clash

Thalente Mbatha will play no part against Richards Bay on Saturday, 11 May, after picking up a fourth booking of the campaign, against Chippa. Pirates were comfortable 2-0 winners against the Chilli Boys, thanks to a brace from red-hot striker Tshegofatso Mabasa. Mbatha has been a key figure since arriving from SuperSport on loan. The consensus is that Pirates will exercise their option to sign him permanently. A clash against relegation strugglers Richards Bay isn’t the worst match for him to miss, although the visitors are fighting for their lives in the top flight. Mbatha and Makhuala anchored the midfield against Chippa, so Miguel Timm should come in for the suspended Mbatha. Pirates face relegation strugglers Richards Bay at 20:00 on Saturday.

Is Mofokeng ready for number 10?

Jomo Sono is a giant name in South African football. The flashy star spent five entertaining years with Orlando Pirates before embarking on a North American adventure. Steve Lekolea tried on his number 10 jersey but nobody can do it like Jomo. More recently, Vincent Pule had a short spell with the jersey in 2020/21 but the number 10 has become more or less extinct. There has been some fan clamour for it to be given to Relebohile Mofokeng. To bestow an honour of this magnitude on the player could be seen as a burden but supporters believe Mofokeng can carry it on his shoulders. Read the full feature.
