Orlando Pirates seemed to have beaten their rivals to the first signing for next season. A highly-reliable source says Kegan Johannes has signed for the Sea Robbers from SuperSport United.

ORLANDO PIRATES SIGN KEGAN JOHANNES

According to Robin-Duke Madlala, who has a solid reputation, Orlando Pirates have signed the 23-year-old star from Baship-Lavis, Cape Town, and despite signing a new deal with SuperSport just a few months ago.

“SuperSport United defender Kegan Johannes is on his way to join Orlando Pirates next season,” Madlala ssaid via Sportswire.

“According to Sportswire sources, Pirates have been looking for a consistent right back for the past two seasons, and Johannes fits the bill. Their current options at the position are limited due to injuries,” the report added.

VERSATILE PLAYER

So attributes will the Cape Town Spurs academy graduate deliver at Orlando Pirates? Beside his aggression, grit, professionalism and disclipline, Johannes is every coach’s dream; he can play multiple position. Johannes will be available to play at right-back, central defence and in defence midfield.

MATCHES IN DIFFRENT POSITONS:

  • Right-Back: 47 matches, two goals and one assist.
  • Central Defence: 19 games and two goals
  • Defensive Midfield: 6 games.

Meanwhile, Johannes, although he has been dropped from the SuperSport team since March, could make a return this evening against his former club. Matsatsantsa will host the Urban Warriors in a DStv Premiership game at the Peter Mokaba Stadium at 19:30.

RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG FOR YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Stellenbosch FC’s Devin Titus was a hot favourite for the Young Player of the Season a week ago but a new update has suddenly turned things around in favour of Orlando Pirates’ Relebohile Mofokeng.

The Bishop Lavis-born Titus went ahead on goal contributions when he scored last week as Stellies beat Golden Arrows 3-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium. Titus marked 12 goals and three assists in 34 games.

Orlando Pirates’ Mofokeng trailed with four goals and six assists in 32 games, while SuperSport’s Shandre Campbell has delivered five goals and five assists in 27 games.

Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League has confirmed changes to the Young Player of the Season criteria, and they favour the Orlando Pirates attacker. The new update says the award can only be won by players under the age of 21, rather than 23.

The player must be under the age of 21 years old on 1 January in the year that the DStv Premiership season commences“, meaning candidates must be U21 and younger. Those eligible for this year’s award must be born in 2002 or later,” the note from the PSL said, as quoted by iDiski Times.
