FNB Varsity Cup Women’s final

The University of Stellenbosch, who topped the table in a tournament that was, shall we say, truncated were clearly ready for a victory celebration.

They crossed the try line seven times in the first half alone and went into the half-time break 53 – 0 up.

In the second half, UJ were able to score a try but in the end, Maties added an extra 10 points to finish the game 63 – 9. Now if you are wondering how a team can score a try and end the game with nine points, you are not alone. It’s because of a Varsity Cup rule called the Point of Origin (POR). When a team gains possession of the ball inside their own half and goes on to score a try without losing possession of the ball the try is awarded two extra points.

FNB Maties points:

  • Tries: Ropah Madyah (POR x 2), Danelle van Zyl (POR), Janke Oosthuizen, Ankia Viljoen, Bianca Augustyn, Danelle van Zyl, Amber Meiring (2)
  • Conversions: Elmé Kruger (6)

FNB UJ point:

  • Try: Precious Maduchem (POR)
  • Conversion: Siham Chtioui
