Trinity International Bible University (TIBU) is trending after Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande revealed that the institution is not registered.

The news comes barely after South African actor Sello Maake kaNcube took to social media to celebrate his honourary doctorate from the university.

MINISTER GOES AFRTER BOGUS INSTITUTION

Taking X, formerly Twitter, the celebrated posted photos from his graduation. He captioned his post, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” Isaiah 43:

The actor added, “Look at God! It’s now Dr Sello Maake kaNcube. Someone please tell my co-pilot Pearl Mbewe Maake KaNcube @Solopearl that she is no longer travelling this life journey with a national treasure only but an honourable DR!”

His post has gained thousands of comments and reactions since it dropped on the internet. No doubt against his post, fans were quick to flood his comments section with congratulatory messages.

However, the minister said Trinity International Bible University was unregistered and could not confer qualifications to anyone.

Part of the minister’s statement reads, “According to our records as the department of higher education and training, Trinity International Bible University is not a registered private higher education institution.”

The other part reads, “Trinity International Bible University is therefore not authorised to offer any qualifications, including honorary degrees.”

However, the university has awarded several celebrities with honorary doctorates over the years. The South African has connected the dots about South African celebrities who received ‘bogus honorary doctorates’ from the institution.

Some celebrities who have received ‘bogus honorary doctorates’ include Sello Maake kaNcube, Elizabeth Serunye and Winnie Mashaba.

Gospel musician Winnie Mashaba received her honorary doctorate from the university in 2019. She received an honorary doctorate for her work and contribution to the music industry.

Taking it to social media, she said, “It is indeed an honour to be amongst those selected by Trinity International Bible University to be honoured as a Doctor of Philosophy in Sacred Music.”

However, against the university’s woes, she has since deleted some of her Instagram posts about her doctorate.

Skeem Saam actress Elizabeth Serunye is also one of the South African celebrities who received honorary doctorates from the university. She received an honorary doctorate in Community Development.
